Welcome the 17th Travelling Docudays UA in Vinnytsia Region

Welcome the traditional December event! Since 2008, Vinnytsia Region has hosted the Travelling International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival Docudays UA every year. It is an event that brings together high-quality documentary cinema, human rights education, open conversations and the opportunity to look at important social issues through the personal stories of people.

In 2020, the 17th Travelling Docudays UA is taking place under special circumstances, but with the same goal — to create a space for dialogue about human rights, dignity, freedom, responsibility and changes that begin with an attentive look at the reality around us.

The festival theme — Teen Spirit

The 17th Docudays UA is dedicated to the topic of growing up. The main theme of the festival is “Teen Spirit”.

In 2020, the image of the festival is chewing gum. It symbolizes childhood pleasure, a protective bubble behind which one can hide from the threats of the world, and also a tool of protest when there is a need to express disagreement.

The Docudays UA programme invites us to reflect on growing up not only as a personal process, but also as a social phenomenon. Who is a young person — an object of care and protection, or a rights-holder? Is the voice of young people heard when important public decisions are made? How are quarantine restrictions, isolation and the infodemic affecting the process of growing up?

The festival organizers invite everyone to look for answers to these questions together — through documentary film screenings, discussions and educational events.

Films worth seeing

The Dutch film “Punks” by director Maasja Ooms focuses on the problems faced by teenagers. It is a film about young people, their experiences, their search for themselves, their need to be heard and the difficult path of growing up.

Films from the DOCU/KIDS programme — “Waves of Light” and “Carla and Nordahl” — tell stories about the lives and growing up of children with disabilities. They help children and adults talk about acceptance, equality, accessibility, respect for another person’s experience and every child’s right to be visible.

In addition to youth-related themes, the festival programme includes films that raise complex moral and ethical questions. In particular, “A Good Death” by Slovak director Tomáš Krupa tells the story of a terminally ill woman who seeks voluntary euthanasia. The film raises difficult questions for viewers about the right to choose, human dignity, the limits of support and society’s responsibility toward a person in a vulnerable situation.

About Docudays UA

Docudays UA is the only international human rights documentary film festival in Ukraine. It is a member of the Human Rights Film Network and takes place annually in Kyiv during the last week of March.

After the Kyiv part of Docudays UA ends, the best films are traditionally presented in the regions of Ukraine during the Travelling Festival. This makes human rights documentary cinema more accessible to communities and creates space for important conversations in different cities, towns and villages across the country.
