Better Student Self-Government in Lviv, Zhmerynka and Dnipropetrovsk Region

Over the course of three months, methodologists and teachers responsible for cooperation with representatives of student self-government learned from the experience of their Polish colleagues and studied the principles of democratic student self-government.

The project “Better Student Self-Government in Lviv, Zhmerynka and Dnipropetrovsk Region” was aimed at strengthening the role of students in school life and developing approaches in which student self-government is not a formality, but a real instrument of participation, responsibility and dialogue.

Training for educators

Within the project, participants learned about the Polish experience of supporting student self-government, discussed democratic principles of student participation in decision-making, and explored ways to adapt these approaches to the Ukrainian educational context.

Special attention was given to the role of teachers and methodologists as adult partners who do not manage student self-government instead of children, but help create conditions for students’ activity, independence and responsibility.

After the training, participants shared the knowledge they had gained with other educators in their communities, making it possible to pass this experience on to a wider circle of schools and teaching teams.

Partnership and continuity

This was already the fourth joint project of Fundacja Civis Polonus, NGO “Unique Country” and the Lviv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education.

For NGO “Unique Country”, this cooperation is an important part of our work in democratic education, the development of student self-government, civic participation and the implementation of practices based on respect for human rights.

Why this matters

Student self-government helps children and teenagers learn responsibility, cooperation, representation of interests, argumentation of their own position and participation in joint decision-making. These skills are important for developing democratic culture not only at school, but also in the wider community.

We are convinced that the experience and skills gained by educators during the project will become a strong foundation for developing student self-government based on the values of human rights, trust, dialogue and democratic principles.
